Brussels, 17 February - The first ever European Citizens Initiative (ECI) met Maroš Šefčovič and the European Commission services to discuss implementation of the demands of the ECI Right2water campagin in European legislation after having received 1,680,172 supportive signatures. As 13 countries had collected the minimum number of necessary signatures, the representatives of the Citizens’ Committee demanded that the European Commission recognise and implement the right to water and sanitation for all, within EU legislation.
The European Citizens’ Initiative ‘Water is a Human Right!’ is a pan-European initiative calling for the European Union (EU) to guarantee clean drinking water and quality sanitation for everyone living in Europe.
EPHA, one of the campaign partners, congratulates the European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU), which is leading the campaign, for taking this initiative to the next level.
Extracts from the campaign’s press statement:
“The message of our ECI is simple. Implement the human right to water, do not liberalise water services in the EU and do more to ensure people across the world have access to clean and safe water”, said Jan Willem Goudriaan, Vice-president of the ECI Right2Water.
The President of the Environment Committee (ENVI) Matthias Groote chaired the event with representatives of the Petitions Committee, the Internal Market Committee and the Development Committee. Over 30 Members of the European Parliament asked questions.
The message to the European Commission from across the parliamentary spectrum is to listen to citizens and get on with the job of implementing the recommendations.
