EPHA took part in the recent consultation on sustainable development. At the meeting, EPHA suggested a number of ways that health could be promoted in the follow up to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) 2012.
EPHA strongly supports the efforts made by the Council to support sustainable development and the Beyond GDP agenda. Moreover, EPHA calls on the Commission to include a health dimension and to give strong political support for progress measures beyond GDP alone, particularly through the health and well-being of its people.
EPHA, representing the public health community, encourages the EU to strengthen its commitment to new ways of measuring progress - it should include targets on reducing chronic diseases, and make progress in exploring alternative growth models. The future EU Sustainable Development Strategy and follow-up to the UNCSD 2012 is an opportunity to help build a healthy, more sustainable future for people living in Europe.
