On March 24, 2012, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organisation Europe jointly launched a new report on Tuberculosis (TB) in Europe. It shows a mixed picture in the WHO EURO region and a 7% decrease in the EU.
On the World TB Day, the ECDC and the WHO launched the 2012 monitoring report on TB, entitled "Tuberculosis surveillance and monitoring in Europe 2012”.
In 2010 309,648 new cases were reported in the Regin with 74000 in the EU and EEA countries. Although this represents a decrease compared to past years, the number of multidrug resistant cases is increasing, which is a real concern for both the ECDC and the WHO EURO.
The proposed WHO action plan for 2011-2015 includes measures to prevent and control disease spread, including combating multidrug resistance.
The ECDC also highlights the fact that it is necessary to adapt services to combat and control TB to the needs, as is the case of the drug user’s population and homelessness.
