The European Agriculture and Health Consortium (EAHC), has been asked to provide input for nutritional requirements for the The Food Aid to Most Deprived Persons Scheme (MDP) scheme.
The commission is looking at including nutritional requirements in the Most Deprived Persons (MDP) Scheme. The scheme originated almost 20 years ago and historically has been used to distribute surpluses to Europes most deprived persons scheme. Because of this the MDP has never included nutritional requirements, however because market purchases are allowed the MDP can actually provide a healthy "food basket". Currently, the scheme also allows purchases on the market. The budget for the scheme has increased steadily and the budget for 2010 is 500 million Euro.
In addition, to including nutrition requirements EAHC stresses the importance of better targeting the finances and linking to local and national initiatives that target increasing access to healthy food by lower socioeconomic groups. The Commission is currently revamping the existing regulation.
