A new World Health Organisation report concludes that 24% of global disease is caused by environmental exposure and therefore could be avoided.
The figures are even higher when children are concerned as 33% of diseases in children under the age of 5 are of environmental origin.
Entitled "Preventing disease through healthy environments", the report aims to be a comprehensive study of environmental hazards contributing to a wide range of diseases and injuries.

The European Forum of Insurances against Accidents at Work and Occupational Diseases organises a Conference on Occupational Diseases Linked to Asbestos, in Brussels, 22 June 2006.

The European Commission 2006 Green Week, which ran from 30 May to 2 June 2006 focuses on changing people’s behaviour with regard to the preservation of biodiversity.

A major international conference on mental health was held in Budapest in March 2006.
This conference is part of the project Implementation of Mental Health Promotion Policies and Strategies in EU Member States and Accession countries (EMIP), of which EPHA is a partner. The project is coordinated by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health - FIOSH/BAuA (Germany).

The European Environmental Agency (EEA) has issued a report analysing "Household consumption and the environment". It concludes that about one third of households’ total environmental impact is related to food and drink consumption.
Covering 31 European countries, the report structures its assessment of the environmental effects of household consumption into four categories: food and drink; housing; personal travel and mobility; and tourism.

The Green Week 2005 will look at all aspects of climate change and in particular at the human factor. The purpose is to invite and encourage everyone to "think aloud" about how we can all change our environmental behaviour. It is aimed at local, regional and national decision-makers, businesses, non-governmental organisations and the general public.

The European Mobility Week 2004 will take place on 16-22 September in hundreds of cities throughout Europe. European Mobility Week makes people aware that we can change patterns of commuting today and that more sustainable means of transport need to be developed in our cities.
Safe streets for children will be the topic of this year. The objective is to reduce road safety risks for children in cities. Cities are key players in providing safe routes to schools or to playgrounds.
