A new Eurobarometer opinion poll across the 25 EU countries reveals that for most citizens a healthy environment is as important to their quality of life as the state of the economy and social factors.
The main environmental concerns of Europeans are those that directly affect their lives. Five priorities stand out :
water pollution (47%),
man-made disasters such as oil spills and industrial accidents (46%),
climate change (45%),
air pollution (45%),

The European Commission will discuss the latest developments on the EU’s Environment and Health Strategy with stakeholders March 19, 2004 in Brussels.
EPHA Environment Network (EEN) and EPHA will attend, as well as many member organisations.
EEN provided written comments to the Commission following the March 3-4, 2004 Consultative Forum meeting. EEN is a member of the Consultative Forum.

Consultative Forum meets to discuss next steps.
The Consultative Forum will meet on March 3 and 4, 2004 to discuss what type of actions and recommendations should be considered in the EU Action Plan on Environment and Health (2004-2010).
The agenda and papers for the meeting (available only 8 days before the meeting) include approximately 800 pages of recommendations put forward by the nine Technical Working Groups.

The European Commission’s Consultative Forum on Environment & Health meeets in Brussels on 18-19 December 2003.
On the agenda are the 9 Baseline Reports produced by the Technical Working Groups (TWG) and which will be reviewed by the Consultative Forum on the basis of the "mandates" for the TWGs which are available on the following websites:

Three EU Regional Conferences serve to initiate and promote the SCALE initiative: Warsaw (6-8 October), Brussels (6-17 October) and Rome (16-17 October).
They constitute the kick-off meetings for the Technical Working Groups (TWGs), and they give the starting shot for the development of the European Environment and Health Strategy.

The European Commission’s process to set up technical and consultative working groups to work towards delivering a draft baseline report on environment and health in December 2003 is nearing completion.
Although information is not yet posted on DG Environment about the composition of the technical working groups, EPHA has the list of members of those that will be coordinated by DG SANCO and DG Environment.

On 11 July 2003 the European Commission is organising a consultation meeting on the newly published Environment and Health strategy (see earlier article).
The goal of the meeting is to discuss the workprogramme for 2003-2004, set out the parameters of the consultation exercise and to identify technical working groups on key issues.
The deadline for registering is 5 July 2003.

The European Commission has just published an Environment and Health Strategy to tackle the key diseases linked with environmental causes.
A joint publication of the Directorates for Health, Environment and Research, the document sets out a long-term vision.
The first phase (2003 - 2010) will focus on four key health concerns: childhood respiratory diseases, neurodevelopment disorders, childhood cancers and endocrine disruptor effects.
