Eurofound’s annual review of working conditions in the EU 2006-2007

Prisons: breeding grounds for disease

The World Health Organisation Europe Region (WHO EURO) launched a Prison Health Database in order to increase the awareness of the problems relating to health in Prisons, to monitor patterns in prison health and to ensure the promotion of public health in prisons.

What are the leading causes of death in the EU?

A report by the EU’s statistical office, Eurostat, illustrates mortality data by cause for the Member States of the European Union. It also indicates that the leading cause of death differs greatly between the 25 Member States at national and regional levels.
According to statistics:
two thirds of deaths in the EU are caused by circulatory diseases and cancer.
Heart attacks, strokes and other circulatory diseases account for 41% of all deaths.

Eurostat’s latest regional data on health

Eurostat has just released the Statistical Yearbook 2005 addressing regional data covering the European Union (EU) 25, as well as Bulgaria and Romania. The Yearbook is meant to be a practical statistical guide to the major issues relating to the evolution of the European Union.

Comparing health data across the EU: is it possible?

A recent study by the International Longevity Centre-France addresses the issue of data collection, by evaluating the methodology and the indicators used in 24 national or European helth surveys.
Data collection at European level is based on national measurements, so it is important to assess the comparability of national indicators that are used in different countries.

Database on European health indicators available online

The European Commission has made public a comprehensive set of health indicators in order to help policy makers track developments in the health status of the European population.
The ECHI (European Community Health Indicators) project was carried out in the framework of the Health Monitoring Programme and the Community Public Health Programme 2003-2008.

EU countries could do more for poorer countries

"EU Heroes and Villains" is the joint NGO briefing paper published by Oxfam, Eurodad and ActionAid which points out which EU countries are living up to their promises on aid, trade, and debt. It also recommends EU Member States to take very specific actions to improve.
The paper exposes Italy as the EU country that spends the least of its Gross National Income (GNI) on aid. Denmark is the one that gives the most: 0.84 (although it used to give more in the past).

Promoting better jobs for workers with disabilities
