On 1 February 2010, EPHA participated in an event organised by the Smoke Free Partnership on illicit trade in tobacco. The meeting gathered a number of experts. The objective of the seminar was to provide an outline of the discussions that will take place at the fourth Intergovernmental Negotiating Body meeting (INB4) in Geneva in March 2010, where the final negotiations will take place on the Illicit Trade Protocol, a subsidiary treaty to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). On 1 March 2010, EPHA sent an open letter to the Chairman of the Polish Parliamentary Health Committee Bolesław Piecha. The letter was sent in reaction to the announcement by the Polish Governement of plans to include a smoking ban in all enclosed public places and workplace, to the legislation to protect public health against the consequences of tobacco use and tobacco products.

Under the theme "smoke-free environments", the World Health Organisation has released its second MPOWER Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic. Please read on for a summary of this report.
In its 2008 Report, the WHO identified six cost-effective solutions, called MPOWER, which have been proven to reduce tobacco use :

On 30 November and 1 December 2009, EPHA participated in a Tobacco Control Advocacy and Campaign Workshop hosted by the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL), the European Network for Smoking Prevention and Global Dialogue for Effective Stop Smoking Campaigns. The two-day Meeting took place in Brussels, at ECL Offices.

The European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) declared 2010 as ’’Year of the Lung’’ in an effort to increase awareness of the importance of lung health. The launch of this campaign in Europe is taking place on 30 January 2010 at the French-language Society of Pneumology (Société de Pneumologie de Langue Française, SPLF) conference in Marseille.

After its adoption by the European Commission in June 2009, the Council of the European Union adopted the Recommendation on Smoking Prevention on 30 November 2009.
Tobacco is the largest cause of avoidable deaths in the EU, with a person dying every 48 seconds in Europe and over a million deaths per year as a direct or indirect consequence of smoking. In order to combat this burden, the European Commission works with national authorities as well as international organisations.

The Working with Communities to Reduce Health Inequalities project is a two-year project, which addresses tobacco control issues affecting children and young people, as it has been proven that measures will be more effective when local communities and peer groups are involved.
Interventions to protect children from exposure to tobacco smoke are more likely to succeed in the context of a wider smoking ban. Nevertheless, significant gaps still exist in fully assessing the effectiveness of (...)

On 30 June 2009, the European Commission adopted a proposal for a Council Recommendation on smoke-free environments. According to conservative estimates, over 79 000 adults, including 19 000 non-smokers, died in the EU-25 in 2002 due to exposure to tobacco smoke at home (72 000) and in the workplace (7 300).
Currently, ten EU countries have comprehensive smoke-free laws in place. The UK and Ireland have the strictest smoke-free provisions with a complete ban on smoking in enclosed public (...)
