Public Consultation on Addictiveness and Attractiveness of Tobacco Additives

A broad consultation process on the addictiveness and attractiveness of tobacco additives was launched a few months ago by the European Commission. Following a first opinion on the issue by the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks produced, the consultation has been opened to the public. 2010 Eurobarometer survey on tobacco

The European Commission published a Eurobarometer survey on tobacco consumption. Based on interviews conducted in October 2009, the results of the survey aim to provide an overview of the European Union citizens’ attitude to tobacco products. World No Tobacco Day 2010 - "Setting the EU tobacco control agenda and celebrating the ’Pledge’"

The Smoke Free Partnership celebrated the 2010 World No Tobacco Day with an event entitled : "Setting the EU tobacco control agenda and celebrating the Pledge" taking place at the European Parliament on 31 May 2010. More information about the event is available below.

EPHA Open Letter supporting a reform of the Spanish tobacco legislation

On 8 June 2010, EPHA sent an open letter to Ms Trinidad Jimenez, Minister of Health and Social Policies for Spain, regarding the reform of the tobacco legislation presented on 2 June 2010. The reform is welcomed by the European Public Health Alliance as an example for other countries across the world to follow.
The European Public Health Alliance welcomes the Spanish initiative to broaden the scope of the existing law and to introduce a smoking ban in all public places in Spain.

Australia : first country to mandate plain packaging of cigarettes

Tobacco kills an increasing number of Australians every year. Given that smoking is a preventable cause of death, the Australian government has decided to act in order to reverse this trend. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd marked a step by announcing on 29 April 2010 that the country will mandate the plain packaging of cigarettes.

Despite public health arguments, Poland says "no" to comprehensive smoking ban in public places

Over the last few months, Poland has revised its national tobacco legislation. EPHA was very active to protect public health objectives against attempts to extend the opportunities for smoking in public spaces – hence increasing exposure to environmental tobacco smoke.

On 29 April 2010 Poland`s Acting President Mr Komorowski signed the new anti-tobacco legislation. There are 6 months to implement the Act.

Passive Smoking and Children- Report by the Tobacco Advisory Group of the Royal College of Physicians, London

On 24 March 2010 the Tobacco Advisory Group of the Royal College of Physicians launched its most recent report on passive smoking and children, in which it examines the case for public health action to increase the protection of children from second-hand tobacco smoke. EPHA attended the report launch, where the authors discussed their findings.

Smoke Free Partnership Seminar on Combating the illicit trade in tobacco and its consequences for Europe and Africa

On 1 February 2010, EPHA participated in an event organised by the Smoke Free Partnership on illicit trade in tobacco. The meeting gathered a number of experts. The objective of the seminar was to provide an outline of the discussions that will take place at the fourth Intergovernmental Negotiating Body meeting (INB4) in Geneva in March 2010, where the final negotiations will take place on the Illicit Trade Protocol, a subsidiary treaty to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). (...)

Open Letter to Polish Government on Smoking Ban

On 1 March 2010, EPHA sent an open letter to the Chairman of the Polish Parliamentary Health Committee Bolesław Piecha. The letter was sent in reaction to the announcement by the Polish Governement of plans to include a smoking ban in all enclosed public places and workplace, to the legislation to protect public health against the consequences of tobacco use and tobacco products.
