Health Action International, an EPHA member, will hold its annual conference and assembly in Brussels on 12-14 October 2007.
This is advance notice of the HAI Europe annual general meeting.
This year it will be held in Brussels on Friday 12, Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 October.

EuroHealthNet, in close collaboration with the Czech National Institute of Public Health (NIPH), in July 2007 launched a new EU consortium for action on socio-economic determinants of health entitled DETERMINE.
DETERMINE will concentrate on the underlying socio-economic determinants for health. It will build on and take forward existing work in the area of the social determinants of health and on health inequalities in an EU context.

Updated with information about the conference on 6-7 September. A new Thematic Network called DIETS (Dietitians Improving the Education and Training Standards) was launched in October 2006 and is led by the University of Plymouth. EPHA is a member of the network.
DIETS builds on the excellent foundations which the European Federation of Associations of Dietitians (EFAD) established through their initiatives in education, such as developing the European Benchmark Statement for Dietitians. (...)
Cancer Research UK has published a study into the increase risk of developing bowel cancers due to drinking alcohol, on 30 July 2007.
The major study was undertaken as part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) by Cancer Research UK has found that regular drinkers face a more than 10% increased risk of developing bowel cancer, and the more people drink the higher the risk.

The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) and the London School of Economics (LSE) are organising an international health conference entitled: Recent Advances in Clinical Medicine, Public Health and Health Policy that will take place from 20 to 22 September 2007 in Athens, Greece.
This 3-day event will focus on areas of clinical medicine, public health, and health policy that are of particular relevance to South Eastern European countries.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its first ever report highlighting children’s special susceptibility to harmful chemical exposures at different periods of their growth.
This new volume of the WHO is in cooperation with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) within the International Programme on Chemical Safety. On 19 October 2007, the 27 Member States finally reached agreement on the text of the Reform Treaty which will be formally adopted on 13 December in Lisbon, Portugal.
In June, EU leaders agreed on the mandate for the 2007 Inter-governmental conference (IGC), to draft the Reform Treaty after the ’Constitutional Treaty’ of 2004 was rejected by popular referenda in France and the Netherlands. The final text differs from the original mandate in several areas.

The European Commission, DG SANCO, launched a new brochure to answer usual citizen’s questions about their rights as consumers, on July 2007.

The European Commission DG SANCO has opened public consultation on EFSA opinion about genetically modified soybean for food and feed uses, on 10 August 2007.
The public has the opportunity to make comments on the EFSA opinion during a month from the day of the publication of the EFSA opinion (10 August 2007). The comments should be addressed to the European Commission by an on-line form.

The annual World Health Report of the World Health Organisation (WHO) for 2007 addresses the health threats to global security.
This year’s World health report, entitled "A safer future: global public health security in the 21st century", was published on 23 August 2007.

The World Health Organisation has published the World Health Statistics for 2007 in an updated version of their Statistical Information System (WHOSIS).
This third edition of WHO’s report includes a section with 10 highlights of global health statistics for the past year as well as an expanded set of 50 health statistics.
WHOSIS database can be either used as an on-line tool or downloaded along with the data tables, and allows access to comparative data from across the world.

European Commission DG SANCO has published three summaries on scientific opinions on the safety of tooth whiteners, sunbeds and nanotechnology intended for non-scientists. The publications are available from summer 2007.

The European Commission has decided to continue the infringement procedure against Finland due to its non-compliance with the Court judgement that confirmed Finland’s failure to comply with a Directive prohibiting oral tobacco from being placed on the market.

National Childbirth Trust (NCT), Save the Children and UNICEF UK, published a report, A weak formula for legislation: how loopholes in the law are putting babies at risk, to ask UK Government to stop formula milk promotion, on 7 August 2007.

Nurses and doctors in Poland have taken the streets during a month, between mid-June and mid-July 2007, to force the government to increase wages and inject more funds into the public health sector.

The high court in Madras has rejected the Novartis challenge to Indian Patent laws. Campaigners for access to essential medicines have welcomed the courts ruling, having feared that any other judgement would have jeopardised the large scale generic drug manufacturing industry in India.
The company had claimed that Indian patent law did not comply with the country’s Constitution following the rejection of their patent application for a cancer drug "Glevic".
