The three year, European wide collaboration on sexual and reproductive rights for young people through the ’SAFE Project’ came to an end at a closing conference in Brussels on 8/9 October 2007.

Updated with information about the conference on 6-7 September. A new Thematic Network called DIETS (Dietitians Improving the Education and Training Standards) was launched in October 2006 and is led by the University of Plymouth. EPHA is a member of the network.
DIETS builds on the excellent foundations which the European Federation of Associations of Dietitians (EFAD) established through their initiatives in education, such as developing the European Benchmark Statement for Dietitians. (...)
EPHA is organising a training session on nutrition and health before the end of 2007.
The aim of the session is to identify ways to build links with research institutions and identify research groupd interested in working with civil society organisations on the field of nutrition and health.
The session will be an occassion for civil society organisations to deepen their understanding of nutrition and health and to strengthen their capacities to approach scientific questions.

The European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) concluded its three-year project "Building the Public Health Community across Europe" by organising an international conference. The conference "Health in the Enlarged EU" held in Bratislava on 16-17 April 2007, is settled by a final report now available.

EPHA is a partners of the STACS Project funded by the European Commission, DG Research. The purpose of the project is to support the active participation of civil society organisations in research projects.
The STACS (Science, Technology and Civil Society) project brings together a consortium of six organisations coordinated by the Fondation Sciences Citoyennes (FSC).

On 14th of November, 2006 the Malta Recourse Centre (MRC) held a Practices Exchange Meeting on Networking in Public Health, in Malta .
As part of the EPHA’s Central and Eastern European project, the MRC, in cooperation with Civic Alliance Latvia (CAL), held a meeting for a variety of Maltese organisations working on public health in order to discuss the scope for setting up a public health network in Malta.

As part of the EPHA activities in CEE countries, a questionnaire with questions about public health and networking was sent out targetting specific NGOs during 2006.
Out of the 16 organisations targeted with the questionnaire, 5 sent out a completed response.
Slovenia: “Centre for AIDS Prevention and Vulnerable Groups” confirms that in their country there is a public health platform of NGOs, although civil society participation in public health decission making is not yet (...)
The second Bridging the Gap Conference took place in Helsinki, on the 20-22 November 2006. It aimed to address the implementation of cost effective policies to reduce the harm done by alcohol.
Organised by Eurocare, the conference addresed the following six themes:
Creating evidence;
Protecting young people;
Protecting third parties;
Combating drink-driving;
Preventing alcohol-related harm among adults;
Informing and raising awareness on the impact of alcohol.

Between the 20 and 23 November, EPHA organised a Study Visit to Brussels for health NGOs from New EU Member States.
The aim of the visit was to provide the participants with a better understanding of EU institutions and structures, to increase their knowledge of health-related policies at EU level and to develop their capacity to participate in European health networks and projects.

The SPHERE project partners met in Montreux, in Switzerland on the 15th of November, prior to the EUPHA 14th Conference on Public Health.
A partner meeting of the project SPHERE (Strengthening Public Health Research in the EU) was held on the 15th November in Montreux, a day before the EUPHA (European Public Health Association) conference.

The Association of Natural Medicines in Europe - ANME organises a conference on the situation of natural medicines in the European Union context. It takes place in Frankfurt (Germany) on the 11 November 2006.
While discussions on health care costs and reimbursement structures are going on, while regulations on pharmaceuticals are being released, some of them threatening the test certificate of natural drugs, CAM is neglected in the debate on health policy.

On the 30 May 2006, EPHA organised a conference on health promotion in Liepaja, Latvia.
The conference was the main activity of Health Promotion week in Liepaja and the follow-up activity of Conference in Riga.

A second phase of the Bridging the Gap project is currently being negotiated with the European Commission. The leading partner of the second phase will be the National Public Health Institute of Slovenia.
The project was funded by the European Commission for the years 2004-2006. It includes partners in 30 European countries as well as the World Health Organization (European Office), the European Youth Forum, the European Public Health Alliance and the European Cultural Foundation.

The VOICE project of which EPHA is a partner has given its latest awards to two initiatives that could have positive and negative repercussions respectively on driving behaviour and the safety of all road users.
The positive award goes to the car lease company LeasePlan Nederland N.V. for offering in-car assistance to keep safe speeds and distances as part of the Belonitor project. The negative award has been given to the car rental company Sixt in Germany for glamorising speed through (...)
The Voice project has given two awards for local communities or projects dedicated to promote the needs of disabled persons and improving road safety around schools.
The Voice project has given a Mobility award to Neil Betteridge, as chairman and representative of the Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee (DPTAC), for their work to promote the needs of disabled persons in the UK and to ensure that they have access to all modes of transport.

The Voice project, of which EPHA is a partner, presented its annual award to promote good practice to protect vulnerable road users to Rob Tinlin, the mayor of Southen-on-Sea, on the Southern coast of England.
This award grants the efforts to promote road safety in the city. Mr Tinlin has particularly procured public-private partnership for investment in various infrastructure measures, including several designed for vulnerable road users.

The VOICE (Vulnerable Road Users Organisations in Cooperation across Europe) campaign headed by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) and in which EPHA takes part, presented its awards for traffic law enforcement.
The EU member state administration with the best record is Finland, whilst the administration with the poorest record is Poland. These awards highlight the variable performance of EU member state Administrations in enforcing traffic laws and the effect this has on the (...)
Following the publication by the European Commission of its proposal for the Seventh Research Framework Programme (FP7) (2007-2013) and the recent two FP6 calls for proposal targeting civil society, the role of civil society organisations must be significantly strenghtened in research.

Country partners and Consortium members of the project EMIP (Implementation of mental health promotion and prevention policies and strategies in EU member states and applicant countries) met in Tallinn on 22 and 23 September to discuss the results of the project.
The meeting was hosted by the Estonian-Swedish Mental Health and Suicidology Institute and started with a session dedicated to sharing experiences from Consortium members.
