The Australian Ministry of Health and Ageing has produced a study of the Returns on Investment in Public Health: An Epidemiological and Economic Analysis.

The report describes an epidemiological and economic analysis of five public health programs, namely: programs to reduce tobacco consumption, coronary heart disease, HIV/AIDS, measles and Hib-related diseases and road trauma. Specifically the research details the financial and economic return on investment of past public health programs associated with these areas.

The research shows that public health programmes can provide significant health improvements and financial benefits. For example the estimated net benefit of programs to reduce tobacco consumption is 8.427 billion Australian dollars. For coronary heart disease the estimated benefits were 994 million AUS dollars. Initiatives to combat HIV/AIDS delivered 2.5 billion AUS dollars of benefits. Significant financial gains and reductions in mortality are noted for road safety campaigns.
