Health Action International (HAI) was founded in 1981 to provide a voice and a forum for groups wanting to help policy makers and governments address the problems posed by the global pharmaceutical supply system and to become an advocate for consumers on a broad range of issues relating to medicines and health.
Since 1981 HAI has grown to become an informal network of over 200 autonomous network members in 70 countries worldwide, ranging from international NGOs to small groups of health-workers or concerned individuals. There are four coordination centres (Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and South America) that serve the needs of the region, responding to local developments and also coordinating international advocacy and campaign work.
HAI actively promotes a more rational use of pharmaceuticals and is working towards a world where all people, especially the poor and disadvantaged, have a human right to health and to equitable access to affordable quality primary health care.
HAI recognises that poverty and social injustice are the greatest barriers to health and sustainable development and is working for just societies where all people can equitably participate in decision making and allocation of resources.
