A new report by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization points to the rising numbers of people going hungry - November 2003
The report The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2003 shows that the downward trend of the 1990s has been halted, and that the number going hungry has increased by 18 million in recent years. According to the FAO, this takes up the number to approximately 842 million people.
This means that the target set by the World Food Summit to reduce the numbers suffering under-noursihment in half by 2015, is unlikely to be met.
The report does point to some successes, notably in China, however, this is contrasted with Asia’s other growing economy, India, where food insecurity has actually increased.
With European Parliamentary elections next June, is it time the moral and political arguments about rising levels of hunger are addressed by European leaders?
