Women in Europe for a Common Future (WECF) have called on civil society groups to urgently respond to the EU consultation on a draft new chemicals policy. (The deadline for comments was July 10).

In a press release following their conference 28-29 June, they say that the European chemicals industry and the United States government have together mounted one of the biggest-ever lobbying campaigns against tighter chemicals controls.

"This [industry and American administration lobbying] is one of the most massive lobbying campaigns in the history of the EU," said Inger Schoerling, MEP (Sweden, Green Party).

The US is reportedly spending US$50 million on lobbying, and US embassies in Europe have been bombarding the European Commission with messages.

The conference, ’Working Towards a Toxic Free Future’, urged civil society groups to respond to the consultation via a website set up by green groups through the European Environmental Bureau (EEB)
