The European Commision has released the results of research into the health risks and impact of tattoos and body piercing. Problems include the fact that many inks used in tattoos derive from car paint or writing inks and there is no data on safe use on skin. When health standards are disregarded, these practices can bring about viral infections such as hepatitis, HIV; bacterial and fungal infections; allergic reactions such as skin irritation and urticaria; malignant lesions such as melanoma; leprosy and other devastating diseases.

The Commission plans to develop safety standards for professional use and will cooperate with the Council of Europe which has drafted a resolution on "tattoos and permanent make-up".

EU research on health impact of tattoos and body piercings

i have just had a very quick look at your artical on the health impact of tattoos and body piercings. I myself had my ears pierced at the age of three and it took years for the holes to heal properly i am now 35. about 7 years ago i went on holiday and had ahenna tattoo done thinking it was safe, how wrong was i, as i had a reaction to it, yes it was a black henna tattoo. I now have a perminant tattoo where the henna tattoo was and i have never had any problems with it. As a result of the henna tattoo i cannot use hair colous or any other type of chemical colour due to a sensativity to the chemical PPD which is present in all hair colourants. I am a mature student at the moment on a access course and currently doing a research project on this very issue. Due to my own experiances.

EU research on health impact of tattoos and body piercings

Hello, i currently have 5 piercings, all in my ears, and nothing has happened /yet/. Also, both my parents have permanent tattoos, and they’re perfectly fine. I am doing a project on this issue, and i believe that the impact tattoos and piercings have on your health is very minimal. You should know in advance if you’re allergic to the products being used, along with taking care of it. And if you do that, you should have no problem.
