- Report - The Battle against tobacco, cancer and heart disease

The last few months have proved frantic in the area of tobacco policy. Following the unexpected resignation of EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer policy, Malta’s Tonio Borg received the backing of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU to be appointed as new Health Commissioner. In his Parliamentarian hearing, Mr Borg stated that, if given the post, one of his priorities was to launch the belated Tobacco Products Directive into inter-service consultation and have it released before the end of 2012: a promise which he lived up to, despite strong pressure from the tobacco industry.

During this process, the European Parliament demonstrated its strong interest in the dossier and made its voice heard which participated to the successful release. It is now time to step up efforts.

In order to keep the momentum and address the challenges associated with the recent release of the Tobacco Products Directive, the European Parliament MEPs Against Cancer and the MEP Heart Group, supported by the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL), The Smoke Free Partnerhip (SFP) the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) and the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) are organising a twofold event on the 19th of February:

  • A high-profile seminar with the participation of Health Commissioner Tonio Borg
  • An exhibition on tobacco control in Europe.
  • Speakers from the European Parliament and representatives from the Irish presidency of the Council of the European Union will attend the meeting and address issues related to one of the most controversial public health dossiers.

More information will be posted here shortly. We do hope you will be able to join us at this timely discussion. If you would like to attend the event, please send an email to Tereska Van Den Abeele
