The Rio to Johannesburg process

Agenda 21, adopted at the UNCED meeting held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 3 to 14 June 1992, is available at http://www.un.org/esa/sustdev/agenda21.htm

It includes:

- the preparatory committee report on health and sustainable development prepared by WHO and a report of the UNECE (United Nations European Commission for Europe) regional ministerial meeting for the World Summit on Sustainable Development

- The NGO dialogue paper from the multi-stakeholder meeting at PrepCom2.

"EU strategy for sustainable development, Stakeholders’ views", was produced in April 2001 by the European Environmental Bureau, Friends of Nature International, Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE), and Heinrich Böll Foundation.

European NGOs

The Northern Alliance for Sustainability (ANPED) brings together NGOs and voluntary organisations in all parts of the Northern Hemisphere and is responsible for follow-up on the 1992 Rio UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). ANPED is a signatory to the Global Deal and home to the European Health and Environment Network of which EPHA is a vice chair. Website: http://www.anped.org

Women in Europe for a Common Future are responsible for European women’s preparation for WSSD. They are also signatories to the Global Deal and have held a website discussion group and a major meeting in Prague in March 2002 on women and sustainable development. Website: www.wecf.org

International Society of Doctors for the Environment (ISDE) has produced a primer on international environment and health policies. (http://www.isde.org) They are signatories to "Prescription for Johannesburg", a statement prepared by Physicians for Social Responsibility amongst others.
