An EU funded project to test the exposure to air pollution in cities has completed an initial pilot phase in Portugal. ’People’ project involved 500 volunteers wearing special equipment to monitor their personal exposure to the carcinogenic pollutant benzene as they went about their ordinary daily routines. The project is linked to the implementation of Directive 2000/69/EC on air pollution by benzene. The second stage of the project will involve volunteer citizens wearing monitoring devices in many other EU and Accession country cities. For more information visit the People project website

Testing citizen exposure to air pollution in Europe’s cities

There is a method of significantly controlling air pollution in urban areas and it is something that the Dutch government have suggested. It involves covering sections of motorways in and around cities where the traffic congestion is at its most dense with lightweight framed structures, creating tunnels. The air trapped in the tunnels is filtered out using powerful filter systems thereby reducing the amount of CO2 emmissions drastically.

We supply the building system, which comes from Canada and have a proposal ready to submit to governments, EU, WHO or whoever, to supply, erect and fitout these tunnels on a trial basis.

If you can help us present this to the WHO or EU we would be delighted to speak with you.

best regards
