The European Commission has launched a call for applications in order to select members for the group of experts for technical advice on the European Union School Fruit Scheme. The scheme started during the 2009-2010 school year, following the November 2008 Agriculture Council of Ministers’ agreement on a Commission proposal for European-wide provision of fruit and vegetables to school children.
In November 2008, the EU27 Agriculture Ministers agreed on a European Commission proposal to launch a scheme providing fruit and vegetables to EU school children. After the first year of the implementation of the scheme, the European Commission is looking for experts to constitute an expert group in charge of providing technical advice.
The main purpose of the expert group is to provide expertise to the European Commission on evaluating and monitoring the European Union School Fruit Scheme (SFS). Evaluation and monitoring of the programme will then be reported to the Council and the European Parliament in 2012 and will provide the basis for determining whether the programme should be continued and expanded.
The EU School Fruit Scheme is the first policy under the Common Agricultural Policy that has an explicit public health goal. Therefore, its evaluation is extremely important. Moreover, the evaluation will feed into the post-2013 Common Agriculture Policy.
The deadline for submission of applications is 29 November 2010.
