Three Members of the European Parliament have tabled a written declaration supporting the role of chiropractic treatment in healthcare systems.
The declaration, submitted by Kyriacos Triantaphyllides MEP (Cyprus, GEU/NGL), Satu Hassi MEP (Finland, Greens/EFA) and Kriton Arsenis MEP (Greece, S&D), calls for the uniform recognition of chiropractic services across EU Member States. Whilst chiropractic is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an independent health profession, and university education in the field is harmonised at EU level, recognition at Member State level remains diverse.
Working alongside the MEPs, the document was supported by EPHA member, the European Chiropractors Union (ECU).
The declaration was submitted on 14 June 2010 and needs to bear the signatures of half the total number of MEPs by 14 October 2010 in order to be adopted by the full plenary session.
