A group of MEPs has launched a Written Declaration on a regulation limiting the industrially produced trans fatty acid content of food products.
Industrially produced trans fatty acids increase the likelihood of being overweight and obese as well as developing diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. Therefore, Alyn Smith MEP (Greens/EFA, UK), Asa Westlund MEP (S&D, Sweden), Frieda Brepoels MEP (Greens/EFA, Belgium), Jim Higgins MEP (EPP, Ireland) and Marit Paulsen MEP (ALDE, Sweden) ask the European Commission:
to limit the content of industrially produced trans fatty acids to 2% of the total fat content of a product and
to strengthen the collaboration between the food industry and health and nutrition professionals while developing alternative substances.
The Declaration needs to gather 50% of MEPs before 19 July 2010. EPHA welcomes the initiative and encourages readers to contact MEPs and support the Declaration.
