Around 330 000 women are yearly diagnosed with breast cancer amongst which more than 90 000 die. Given that deaths could be avoided with appropriate and effective cancer screening, five MEPs initiated a Written Declaration on the fight against breast cancer in the European Union, which was successfully adopted by the European Parliament.

Initially launched by Elizabeth Lynne MEP (ALDE, UK), Michail Tremopoulos MEP (Greens/EFA, Greece), Livia Jaroka MEP (EPP, Hungary) as well as Lidia Joanna Geringer de Oedenberg MEP (S&D, Poland) the Declaration asks for the following actions to be put into place:

- national breast screening,

- the European Commission to monitor the implementation of mammographic screening in all EU countries on a biennial basis,

- the European Commission to support evaluations of the usefulness of screening for women aged under 50 years old and over 69,

- the European Commission to provide updated figures on breast cancer and support national registers of cancer,

- in accordance to the EU guidelines for 2016, multidisciplinary specialist breast units to be nationally provided. The European Commission should also develop a certification protocol for these specialist units and regularly report on the progress accomplished.
