A group of Public Health students from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine visited Brussels last month to see how public health policy is made and influenced in the European Capital.
The Masters students were in Brussels as part of a study tour organised by their student association and aided by Susan Williams of EPHA member the Royal College of Nurses, who is a part time student at the School. Their 4 day trip involved touring the European Parliament and talks from various public health stakeholders.
On 15 April they were kindly hosted by London’s European Office and the UK Permanent Representation to the EU. On that day EPHA Governance & Membership Coordinator Sascha Marschang, assisted by Membership and Communications Officer Alison Abrahams, presented the work of the Secretariat influencing public health policy, and also EPHA’s work as a part of the Action for Global Health Brussels network.
The students also saw presentations from Chris White of the North West Health Brussels Office, Britta Baer of the European Health Management Association, Juan Garay Health Team Coordinator, Childrens rights and Needs, DG Development and were scheduled to hear from John Rowan First Secretary (Health and Pharmaceuticals) of UKREP (in his absence they heard from Chris Hobley, Mr Rowan’s counterpart on employment policy.
The majority of the students were international students, including many from developing countries, who were keenly interested in how Global Health Policy is made in Europe. They accompanied EPHA Global Health Policy Officer Dorota Sienciewicz to the European Commission Global Health Policy Forum and saw first hand discussions with Global Health stakeholders. The meeting came directly following the adoptation of the European Commission’s Global Health Strategy.
EPHA Secretary General Monika Kosinska said ’EPHA is delighted to be supporting the next generation of public health professionals on their journey to creating fruitful careers in public health.’
