On the 10 June 2010 the Royal College of Physicians is holding a major conference on how the medical profession can best tackle the social determinants of health and health inequalities - both on a local level and through national policy, and by changes to medical education and training.
This conference, entitled "How doctors can close the gap: Tackling the social determinants of health through culture change, advocacy and education" aims to inform, educate and share best practice examples of how social determinants of health can be tackled by the medical profession.
Speakers include Sir Harry Burns (CMO Scotland), Sir Michael Marmot (author of the recent review of health inequalities "Fair Society, Healthy Lives") and Professor Peter Rubin (Chairman, GMC).
The principle aims of the conference are:
To increase knowledge and information sharing amongst clinicians and other health professionals about how social determinants of health affect the NHS and UK health system.
To create a clear understanding of the leadership/advocacy role which doctors can play in addressing the social determinants of health both within their own communities and the wider healthcare and social systems.
To explore opportunities for the incorporation of training in the social determinants of health into existing education programmes for health professionals.
