Eurocare’s Response to Consultation on marketing of alcohol

Eurocare recognizes that article 15 provides protection of minors.

Indeed, there is a clear difference between the regulation of television and other media such as cinema or print.

Yet, while the current regulatory system exists to govern the content of individual advertisements, it is probably the cumulative weight and thrust of alcohol advertising that is most important in encouraging young people to regard alcohol as an essential part of a successful social and increasingly, sex life.

This quantitative aspect is not dealt with by Article 15.

The European Commissioner’s hearings form part of a work programme adopted in January 2002 as part of the upcoming review of the EU’s television broadcasting Directive.

The European Commission will use the outcome of these consultations, as a basis for publishing a communication late this year or early next year on the future of the EU’s audiovisual policy.

The Protection of minors and right of reply are some of the issues on the agenda for the second series of public consultations being held on June 23, 24 and 25 by Viviane Reding.
