On 30 November, a meeting of the Employment, Social Affairs, Health and Consumer Affairs Council was held in Brussels. A summary of its conclusions on the European ageing population is available here.
Council conclusions on Healthy and Dignified Ageing
The Employment, Social Affairs, Health and Consumer Affairs Council emphasised the challenges the elderly population faces in the European Union. In order to tackle these challenges efficiently, the Council highlighted keeping health and dignified ageing at the top of national agendas. Therefore, the Council encourages Member States to address the economic consequences, the development of social and health services, and a professional adaptation of training and working methods with attention given to health and safety at work.
Furthermore, the Council calls on the European Commission to review activities regarding healthy and dignified ageing. The Council proposes further activities in 2011, to support local, national and European actions in order to achieve this objective. Finally, the European Commission is strongly encouraged to develop awareness-raising activities to promote active ageing.
Together, Member States and the Commission are invited to increase cooperation in promoting healthy and dignified ageing for all, through the Open Method of Coordination on social protection and social inclusion. The Health Strategy and its objective of fostering a good health in an ageing Europe will be pursued while applying a cross-sector approach involving the social and health sectors.
