In order to follow the changing trend of the nutrition and health situation in an increasing Union, the 2009 report covers 24 EU member states plus Norway regrouped into four geographical regions: North, South, West and Central and Eastern Europe.

The European Nutrition and Health Report 2009 contributes to the identification of major nutrition and health problems particular to the EU regions and to the monitoring and evaluation of food and nutrition policies already in place within the Member States.

The method implies collecting and critically reviewing available data, published and unpublished, on the most common indicators used for the assessment of nutrition and health situation of 25 European countries.

Additional objectives are specific to the 2009 version. Special attention has been put on a description of trends of average food supply in the European Union (Chapter 4), the food availability at the household level in the EU (Chapter 5), the food consumption in adults on the basis of dietary surveys (chapter 6) an energy and nutrient intake based on national data divided by age (chapter 7), and finally an overview on health and lifestyle indicators (chapter 8).

The authors’ will to cover a wide range of topics and to base their statements on an updated and enriched base of data make the European Nutrition and Health Report 2009 an essential source of information.

Like the previous project, the current project was funded by the European Commission and coordinated by the Institute of Nutritional Sciences of the University of Vienna, Austria, directed by Professor Ibrahim Elmadfa.
