On 25 – 28 November 2009, the 2nd European Public Health Conference took place in Lodz, Poland. Over 800 participants attended the conference. Participants included health professionals, academics and representatives from the European Commission and NGOs.

The EPHA Secretariat organised the following three workshops:

- The future of public health in Poland

- Tackling the wider determinants of health: effective policy change

- Can research ever get into the policy-making machine?

Positive feedback was received from the three workshops and the EPHA Secretariat looks forward to further developing the topics with participants and EPHA members.

In addition to the workshops, Monika Kosinska, EPHA Secretary General, presented in three workshops during the conference. She also presented during the Environment and Health plenary session, representing the Health and Environment Alliance, where she is an elected member of the Executive Committee together with Marc Danzon. outgoing Regional Director for the World Health Organisation, Andrzej Rys, Director of Public Health and Risk Assessment at the European Commission and David Stanners, European Environment Agency. Her presentation, "20 years of NGOs’ involvement in Environment and Health", prepared by HEAL Director Genon Jensen who was unable to attend, can be found at the bottom of this article.

EPHA’s participation in the conference increased the representation of civil society and non-governmental organisations during the conference, which is traditionally dominated by researchers and academia.

The conference was co-organised by an EPHA member, the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Union (ASPHER) and the European Public Health Association (EUPHA). For more information on the conference, including the full programme, please click here.
