On 3 April 2009, the members of the Platform convened to discuss two main issues- the monitoring of the members’ commitments to the Platform and the reformulation of food products. In addition, a new case study on the impact of the European Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, developed by the IESE Business School in Barcelona, was presented.
Members’ Commitments and Reporting
The guidelines for reporting and submitting commitments has been updated for 2010.
From the end of April, new commitments may be submitted and members can update existing ones.
Reformulation
The Commission noted the need to amend the working paper on reformulation to look beyond food products for retail and include the catering sector. Another pressing question discussed was the need to measure the public health impact of reformulation efforts, taking the Member State (Finland and the UK for example) experience as an indicator.
Case Study on Impact of the Platform
The case study, commissioned by DG SANCO to assess the impact of the Platform on European businesses, will be used as a teaching tool and will give both an overview of the history of the fight against obesity and an overview of the Platform itself in terms of achievements and strong points.
