The World Health Organization, in cooperation with the European Commission and supported by the ECDC, held the Fourth European Immunisation Week between 20 and 26 April 2009. The week was aimed at raising awareness among policy makers and the public about the need for greater immunisation coverage across Europe.

The stated goals of the week where:

1. To raise public awareness and highlight the benefits of immunisation;

2. To support national immunisation systems; and

3. To provide a framework for mobilizing public and political support for efforts to protect the public through universal childhood immunisation.

The week was an opportunity for policy-makers and health professionals to discuss tackling these challenges. It is crucial that politicians in Europe recognise the contribution that public health measures such as vaccinations can make. The European Immunisation Week is an important occasion to raise awareness of something that many people take for granted.
