Ahead of the European Parliament elections in June 2009, several EPHA members have launched their own European manifestos. Each of them addresses key issues for the public health community.
Ensure enough nursing staff to meet patients’ needs;
Stop nurses getting injured at work;
Meet health and social care needs of patients with long-term or
age-related conditions;
Prevent healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs);
training.
The Royal College of Nurses also established an EP elections web-link where you can read its manifesto, discover how to get involved with the campaign and find the information you need to use your vote on 4 June.
To encourage senior citizens to get involved and participate actively in the EP election campaign 2009, AGE has drafted a toolkit on the European Parliament elections. The toolkit provides relevant information, and presents good practices and activities to inspire and support their election campaigns at the national level. The objective is to provide useful information to convince AGE’s members to get involved in the election campaign, and the organisation of activities and debates with MEPs.
Comprehensive protection from tobacco smoke;
Strong measures to counter tobacco marketing, promotion and imagery;
Commitment to taxation as a tool to reduce smoking prevalence;
Tough new measures to control tobacco smuggling;
Promotion of effective stop smoking measures;
Stopping tobacco industry influence on government’s tobacco control policies;
Making the industry liable for its actions;
National and European policies to promote the mental health and well-being of all its citizens - No Health without Mental Health!
A focus on prevention of mental health problems through adequate social protection and inclusion policies in Europe - a minimum level of income for people suffering from mental health problems.
The introduction of a number of measures / programmes to reduce stigma and discrimination against people with mental health problems.
Access to good-quality standards of care and provision of adequate levels of resourcing for the care and treatment of people with mental health problems.
Equal access to education.
Equal access to employment.
The right to housing.
The right to self-determination of people with mental health problems to live independently in the community with proper support where necessary and to make their own choices in life.
A swift ratification and implementation of the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities.
The right to vote and be a candidate in electoral campaigns.
Mainstreaming mental health and well-being across all EU and national policies.
