On 15 - 16 April 2009, the Czech Presidency of the EU will hold a Ministerial Conference entitled ’The Microbial Threat to Patient Safety in Europe’ in Prague, Czech Republic.
The event in Prague, will address the extremely important issue of Patient safety and more specifically healthcare associated infections (HAIs). 10% of patients experience an adverse incident or an HAI resulting in considerable costs to healthcare systems, patients and to health professionals through blame, stress and damaged reputations.
The emergence and spread of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria seriously impacts morbidity, mortality, length of hospital stay and increase in hospital bills. It severely limits modern patient care (e.g. organ transplantation, cancer treatment, intensive care, even surgery), which would not be possible without effective antibiotics.
The issue of Patient Safety is being considered a priority by both the Troika of Presidencies (France, Czech Republic and Sweden) and by the Commission, this event should be an interesting opportunity for high level policy makers and experts in the field to discuss the issues at stake.
