This newsletter is in celebration of our 15 year anniversary, as EPHA enters a new phase of public health advocacy and continues to build on its successes as we enter its fifth European Parliament.

The Brussels landscape has changed significantly in the last fifteen years, with new public health groups advocating patient rights and citizens’ issues, as well as significant changes in the approach from all the European institutions to the role of Europe in the health field. Slowly but surely, the dominance of free-market priorities have been balanced by the inclusion and development of policies that not only facilitate free movement but also work to protect and promote health. The patient-centric approach from the Commission is a good recent example of this, the changes to the public health programme during this time is symbolic of this evolution. Some battles are still being fought however: direct to consumer advertising is still on the table, albeit in another guise, and despite 34 years of operation regional funds - the second largest budget line under the EU - are still not accessible enough for those working in health.

As EPHA enters its 16th year pushing for health at the heart of Europe, we are delighted to do so with the support of the European Commission via an operating grant for 2009. Members can find the 2009 Strategic Priorities and Annual Work Plan online here

In honour of EPHA’s 15 year anniversary, please find a special message from EPHA’s President Joanne Vincenten here. We are also delighted to include three interesting insights via special guest contributions charting the development of our alliance over the last fifteen years, and discussing the possibilities for the future. The guests represent three of our key stakeholders, the European Commission, the European Parliament and EPHA members:

- Contribution from Michael Hübel, Head of the Health Determinants Unit at DG SANCO

- Contribution from John Bowis, MEP

- Contribution from Paul Belcher, EU Government Affairs Advisor for the Royal College of Physicians (EPHA Member)

We also thought it would be quite fun to share some of our Public Health Heroes with our readers.
