’Europe for patients’ is intended to provide a coherent framework for healthcare initiatives from the Directorate General for health and consumers (DG SANCO), in the coming months. 10 different Communications, Papers and draft Directives are due before the end of this Commission. These vary from communications on patient safety and rare diseases to draft Directives on organ donation and patient rights. The aim of ’Europe for Patients’ is to bring all these Healthcare, as distinct from health determinant, related initiatives under one banner and to simplify them for better public understanding free from "Euro-jargon"
The ’Europe for Patients’ campaign involves the launch of a logo and a website that will be available to access through the EU health portal and will provide information on any updates on Commission activities in this area translated into 22 languages. Commissioner Vassiliou opened the event in the Berlaymont saying that this is about "clarity and transparency" and is a "Completely new way of working"
Commissioner Vassiliou was followed by ALDE MEP Marian Harkin who highlighted the importance of what the Commission was doing and drew attention to some of the key issues such as the cross border Directive and patient safety. European Patients’ Forum (EPF) president Anders Olauson also broadly welcomed the launch of the new campaign.
