With an increased interest in patient mobility dominating the agenda, there are fears that other issues such as health professional competence and development, have slipped into the back ground. A new study conducted by Sherry Merkur et al. and published in "Clinical Medicine", the Journal of the Royal College of Physicians, shows great divergence between countries in the re-validation of health professionals, post qualification.

The study shows that some countries such as Austria, Germany & Spain put the emphasis on education while others such as France and the Netherlands incorporate peer reviews into the re validation of Physicians. Some countries have proposals on the table to go even further and to introduce re-licensing based on "appraisal and feedback". The study suggests that the European Commission should focus more on the re-validation of physicians to ensure that high quality health professionals are available throughout the Union and asses the impact that increased mobility would have on patients and professionals alike.
