A welcome speech was given by Jean-Marie Beaupuy, Member of the European Parliament (France) and an introduction by Claude Fischer, Director of Entretiens Européens.
The keynote speech was given by Dr. Francois Decaillet, representative of the World Health Organisation to the European Union. He provided a diagnosis of public health in Europe linked to food with a focus on the issue of obesity. He presented socio-economic unbalances in the context of nourishment, the complexity of messages, and obstacles in the form of economic constraints for application of recommendations and public policy reforms.
The Conference was split into 4 round tables with EPHA participation in the round table on: Produce better or produce more? How to reconcile the quality of products with competitive prices and food safety?
The question of product quality is essential and the question of availability and quantity is crucial in the context of recent evolutions in the area of agriculture and trade. EPHA focused on the Common Agricultural Policy and its impact on public health.
