The leading theme of the NEC Forum-> was the Freedoms and Rights of the individuals in competition with the interests of the society. The meeting participants discussed measures and treatment at the end of life, and responsible research in biology and medicine.
Topics also included some theme on the priority list of ethical questions proposed for a pan-European discussion.
The European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies held a meeting on animal cloning and food production, an intervention that ethics consider unnecessary, generally unnatural and unacceptable.
The discussion on ethical pitfalls of the use of biomedical methods to improve the characteristics and abilities of human beings was met with great interest.
The Code of Conduct for Responsible Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies Research called attention to the sever problems of public health in the European region, where differences in public health care funds per capita reach a ratio of 1:30.
The end of life decisions and responsible biomedical research were also considered. The participants supported the recommendation that people with severe suffering have the possibility of palliative sedation.
