With support from the Slovenian Presidency, a book entitled "Responding to the challenge of cancer in Europe" was issued by the umbrella Fighting Against Cancer Today (FACT) representing internationally-recognised EU public health institutes.

Cancer represents the second most important cause of death and morbidity in Europe. Since a significant number of cancers are preventable, effective and coordinated interventions need to be put into place to support cancer prevention.

Accordingly, the scientific publication "Responding to the Challenge of Cancer in Europe" guides Member States to strengthen their policies to change existing trends.

The issue provides evidence on epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, delivery of health care, prevention, health promotion, research and different policies on cancer. It also provides a brief assessment of best practice models and of the state of implementation of the existing international recommendations on cancer screening, disease management and prevention of cancer. Final recommendations are formulated to reduce gaps between and within Member States.

The publication aligns with the decision of the Slovenian Presidency to focus on cancer as a key public health priority and to develop an EU-level strategy for cancer.
