Vassiliou meets Barroso

Mrs. Vassiliou, (pictured right meeting President Barroso) who was tipped as a Health Minister for Cyprus in 1999, has been reportedly very active in the environmental field and human rights. She is known for her outspoken support of womens’ rights and their representation in politics and business. Mrs. Vasiliou studied Law in London and completed post-graduate studies in International Relations. She has been very active in the legal and political scene during her career. Her full CV has been published by the European Commission.

EPHA would like to thank Commissioner Kyprianou for his hard work under this Commission and would like to offer our warm welcome and support to Androulla Vassiliou as she joins us in Brussels.

The Commission has not yet issued an official statement on this matter and some report suggest that a Commissioner reshuffle is a possibility as Kyrpianou will be the second Commissioner to announce his departure in recent weeks. EPHA will continue to keep you up to date with the latest reports as they emerge.

The Commission issued a press release on 29 February 2008 confirming the candidature of Mrs Vassilio for Health Commissioner, and on 28 February 2008 in the afternoon confirming the resignation of Mr. Kyprianou.
