FEANTSA supports a parliamentary initiative to end homelessness calling upon :
the Council to obtain an EU-wide commitment to end street homelessness by 2015;
the Commission to develop a European framework definition of homelessness, elicit statistical data, and provide annual updates on action taken and progress made in EU Member States towards ending homelessness;
Member States to devise ‘winter emergency plans’ as part of a wider homelessness strategy.
The cross-party written declaration has been registered last December by MEPs Mary Lou MacDonald (GUE/NGL, Ireland), Claude Moraes (PES, United Kingdom), Jacek Protasiewicz (EPP-ED, Poland), Gérard Onesta (Greens/EFA, France) and Jean-Marie Beaupuy (ALDE, France).
FEANTSA calls on all MEPs to sign by 25 March 2008 the written declaration and commit themselves to ending an unacceptable though ongoing violation of fundamental rights in the European Union. It also encourages all relevant stakeholders to take action and help secure sufficient MEP support for the adoption of the written declaration.
