The fundación de ciencias del medicamento y productos sanitarios (FUNDAMED), an EPHA member, presented the fourth edition of the “Best in Class” (BIC) ceremony to award medical assistance in the Spanish Health Sector, which took place on 24 November 2009 in Bilbao, Spain.
The “Best in Class” awards are part of an innovative initiative that aims to publicly recognize the efforts of the director teams and hospital professionals to improve and give to patients the best possible attention. The awarding of the prizes is based on the marks gained through the Index of Quality Assistance to the Patient -ICAP-, which makes it possible to evaluate hospitals, units or services from some specific objectives concreted to each modality. Also, the whole process is endorsed by AENOR.

Award “Best In Class” on medical specialities: Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Oncology, Urology, Cardiology, Communicable diseases, HIV patients, Trauma, Emergencies, Intensive Care Unit, Pain Management Unit, Psychiatry, Pharmacy, Hematology, Pulmonology, Neurology, Preventive Medicine, Internal Medicine and Diabetes Unit.
The event was held on 24 November 2009 at the Congress and Music Auditorium in Bilbao, and was chaired by the Basque Health Councilor, Rafael Bengoa.
La Gaceta Médica is a publication that specializes in health by the head of the group “Contenidos e Información de Salud”, of which FUNDAMED is part. The organisation works in collaboration with the “Cátedra de Innovación y Gestión Sanitaria” of the University Rey Juan Carlos (URJC) in Spain. It launched the first edition of the “Best in class awards”, on 27 September 2006 giving 27,000 euros in prizes.
