Events organised by EPHA

2 October 2007 saw the joint EPHA and HEAL conference on climate change and the challenges for public health: priorities for EU action. Lara and Frazer Goodwin attended the meeting, with Frazer chairing the concluding session of the day. A report of the Meeting can be found at EPHA’s website.

The alcohol and drugs working group meeting took place on 15 October 2007 with different EPHA members. Caroline Bollars and Frazer Goodwin attended and chaired the meeting. The conclusion can be found on EPHA’s website.

On 24 October 2007, EPHA and BEUC organised a Health and Consumer Intergroup on the topic of Toy Safety in Strasbourg. Caroline Bollars represented EPHA at the meeting.

Meetings and events attended by EPHA

On 1-2 October, Patricia Fernandez Perez and Liesbeth Timmermans attended Friends of the Earth’s training seminar on misleading advertising in Brussels. Read EPHA’s report on FoE’s seminar

Florence represented EPHA in a conference on participatory democracy methods organised by ECAS, which took place on 3 October 2007. The report of the conference is available in Members Only section.

Caroline Bollars attended The European Health Forum Gastein on 3-6 October 2007. Under the motto "10 Years Gastein - Shaping the future of health" main aspects and challenges of European Health Policy were discussed. Topics were Chronic Diseases, Genomics, Investment and Health, Healthy Environments, Pharmaceuticals and Diabetes. More information will be available on the members only section of EPHA’s website.

From 8 October 2007 to 12 October 2007 Frazer attended a meeting of the partners of the project Action for Global Health in Berlin to plan the activities of the second project year. Full partner-wide decisions on all the activities will be finalised at the next meeting with all staff and management of the partners in December in Madrid.

On 8-9 October, Patricia Fernandez Perez attended the closing conference of the SAFE Project, a European partnership that EPHA was part of, which aimed to promote the sexual and reproductive health and rights of youth across Europe. The conference took place on 8-9 October 2007, in Brussels. EPHA’s report about the conference is available in EPHA’s project section.

On 9-10 October, Liesbeth Timmermans took part in ALTER-EU’s conference and general assembly to define future campaigning priorities. Read EPHA’s report on this event.

On 12 October 2007, Caroline Bollars and Liesbeth Timmermans attended an open seminar on ’Ensuring independent medicines information in Europe’, organised by Health Action International.

From 16 to 17 October, Liesbeth Timmermans attended the Portuguese Presidency RoundTable on Poverty and Social Exclusion in the Azores. See the report on this event.

On 16 October 2007, Foundation EurActiv organised a stakeholder Lunchtime Workshop on a Healthy and active lifestyle - What responsibility to whom? Caroline Bollars, was one of the contributors at the debate to exchange views on the respective roles and responsibilities of the various stakeholders linked to different lifestyle-related health determinants.

The first plenary session of the EU Alcohol and Health Platform took place on 17 October 2007, and Caroline Bollars attended the session together with EPHA members. A report of this meeting will be available on EPHA’s website.

Caroline and Lara represented EPHA at the 6th meeting of the EFSA Stakeholder Consultative Platform on 18-19th October 2007. EFSA ’s Executive Director, Catherine Geslain-Lanéelle, addressed the Platform to update on the work progress since the last meeting of the Platform in April 2007. EFSA ’s work in the area of the Additives, Flavourings and Food in contact materials as well as on Nutrition were in the agenda. Furthermore, the Platform was provided with an update on the activities of EFSA’s Scientific Committee - transparency in risk assessment, cloning, nanotechnology and on communications.

Florence represented EPHA in a roundtable on nutrition, organised by the Royal College of Physicians of London. The report of the event will be shortly available in Members Only section.

Lara participated in a brainstorming meeting about the future of the EU Health Policy Forum with Commission officials and with other European networks of health NGOs. The meeting took place in Luxembourg on 25 October.

Presentations

The European Week of Regions and Cities, 8-11 October 2007, organised a workshop on health: improving public health capacity in the EU regions: possibilities for engagement. On 10 October 2007, Caroline Bollars, gave a presentation at this workshop on the opportunities for input of regions at EU level: advocating for healthy public policies.
