Members of the European Convention are being called upon to reject proposals that would effectively introduce in a new EU constitution a primary legal requirement to promote nuclear power.
In a letter sent to all Convention members, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, WWF, the European Environment Bureau and over 100 other organisations have urged support instead for earlier proposals that would require the abolition of the Euratom treaty commitments.

The hot debate over whether Eastern European countries should keep their nuclear power - once they become full members of the EU - or wind down their current reactors, has shifted gear. According to the French daily Le Monde , Eastern European countries would prefer to continue using nuclear energy despite safety warnings from the West. A specific example is Lithuania which could build a new reactor in addition to the Ignalina nuclear plant that the EU has requested be shut down.
