The EMCDDA Scientific Committee

The Scientific Committee was established in 1993 together with the institutionalisation of the EMCDDA.

The main role of the Scientific Committee is:
- to provide assistance to the Director of the EMCDDA on the work programmes of the centre.
- to issue scientific opinions (which will be published)
- to work on risk assessment

According to Regulation 1920/2006, the Scientific Committee will consist of at most 15 well known scientists appointed in view of their scientific excellence and their independence.

Selection criteria of experts applying for membership

Applicants shall be appointed in their personal capacity and shall give their opinions completely independently of the Member States and the Community Institutions.

Applicants are required to have:
- Proven scientific excellence related to the fields of the mandate of the EMCDDA;
- Experience in peer reviewing scientific work related to the fields of interest of EMCDDA;
- Organisational and management experience in research;
- Professional experience in a multidisciplinary environment, preferably in an international context;
- Experience in providing scientific advice in the required areas of expertise;
- Excellent linguistic skills.
