A letter requesting action had been jointly sent from the NGO network EPHA contributes to; Action for Global Health, the EPHA Member the European Federation of Nurses Associations, and the International Council of Nurses.
The letter highlighted the need for any action to address the reasons why the sector finds it difficult to recruit nurses from Europe by improving all aspects of employment conditions as well as seeking a code of conduct on the recruitment of nurses from developing countries. A further call in the letter was the need for compensation to be given to developing countries for training costs - at the cost levels in Europe - for any nurses that are recruited.
Action for Global Health and EFN will carefully monitor the implementation of this Action Programme and to ensure it is providing a solution to the problems of retaining health workers in both Europe and developing Countries.
This was an issue that the NGO Doctors without Boarders have also this month highlighted as a serious obstacle to improving healthcare in developing countries - especially due to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
