Conservative estimates that 70,000 adults die from passive smoking every year in the EU. And passive smoking in the workplace has been estimated, in the UK alone, to cause the deaths of two people each working day every year.

The report summaries the evidence for smoking cessation methods and proposes brief interventions, lasting only 5-10 mins that can be successfully implemented. Those interventions can be coupled with counselling, group therapy, etc.

6 recommendations are advocated for by NICE: Notably the employers should develop smoking cessation policy in collaboration with the staff and they representatives and inform that a stop smoking support service is available at work. They also should allow staff to attend this cessation services during working hours and without loss of pay. And this action ought to be link with actions of the employees and representatives as well as National Health service stop smoking services and Strategic health authorities and primary care trusts.
