Conference "Health in the Enlarged EU" - Aims and Objectives
The Conference aimed to showcase the impact of the European Enlargement and of European Union policies on the health of citizens, especially in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, as well as to highlight the specific health challenges of these countries.
The objectives of the conference were:
To discuss how the EU Enlargement has influenced the health status, health determinants, health care systems in the new member states and to identify benefits and problems to take into account in future enlargement.
Present the work of EPHA members in relation to the priorities of the EU health policy.
To propose timely policy recommendations to the European Commission to be included in the EU Health Strategy.
It was a two-day event. There was a plenary meeting with key-note speakers from the European Commission, European Parliament, hosting government and the World Health Organisation. There were parallel thematic workshops including presentations, case studies and interactive discussions. The participants discussed existing legislation and policies and contributed to policy recommendations.
There were 150 participants including NGOs, academia, policy makers and, most importantly, participants from Central and Eastern European countries.
