It is meant to review progress achieved in realising the commitments set out in the 2001 Declaration and to renew political commitment.

It will involve all sectors of the international community, governments, civil society and the private sector.

For the first time, a person living with HIV will address the General Assembly plenary, normally reserved for Member States and UN officials. There will also be a civil society hearing, which provides civil society with an opportunity to exchange views with Member States.

Should you want to participate in this hearing and panel discussion, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS has set up some rules to select Civil Society Participants.

This event follows the adoption of a resolution on HIV/AIDS during the United Nations 60th General Assembly in December 2005.

In the same session, the UN General Assembly also adopted a draft resolution on malaria in developing countries, particularly Africa.
