The workshop, which was held in Prague, was organised as part of the EPHA project “Strengthening the development of national platforms on public health in new EU member states”.

The aim of the workshop was to raise the awareness of NGOs in the Czech Republic of the importance of developing mutual cooperation between the EU and National level, through participating in public health issues.

The workshop was opened by Renata Dohnalova from host organisation SKOK. A presentation was then given by Agnese Knabe, regarding EPHA’s project “Development of national platforms on public health in 10 new EU member states”. Presentations were also given by two Czech organisations:

- Civilia Foundation, by director Jaroslava Jones.

- National Institute of Public Health, by Eva Ulicna.

The National Institute of Public Health is participating in a similar project in partnership with EuroHealthNet. The aim of this project is to build - up the capacity of national agencies and to strengthen mutual cooperation.

Anne Hoel, EPHA’s Policy Officer, gave a presentation on "NGO participation opportunities in EU institutions. This included information on the legislation processes of the 3 main EU institutions - the Parliament, Council and Commission; and examples of EPHA lobbying activities. Participants then split into two groups to work on possible lobbying strategies.

An evaluation session at the end of the workshop revealed that the participants had found the workshop to be a valuable experience, however further training on lobbying was needed.

In total 28 participants applied for the workshop, representing public health and social NGOs.

The workshop was organised by the following partners:

- European Public Health Alliance

- Civic Alliance, Latvia

- Association of non-governmental, non-profit organisations active in the areas of social assistance and social health care in Czech Republic (SKOK)

- Civilia, Czech Republic
