The CAP has a number of mechanisms that are harmful to health, for example 1 billion Euros paid every year to 100 000 farmers to grow tobacco, the destruction of 1 million tonnes of fruit and vegetables per year, the subsidies for butter and other fats of animal origin, subsidies for alcohol production.

EPHA, together with a number of other NGOs would like to see the CAP re-focused to support organic farming, local production and fewer food miles, maintaining diversity of crop varieties, promoting environmental protection and less chemical/pesticide intensive farming. In addition the practice of dumping excess subsidized EU food in the developing world is destroying local farmers and adding to poverty.
